Nominal polysemy: a systematic polysemy. (1) a. There are many pictures in this book. b. This book is very difficult to understand. (2) a. Mary has painted the window. b. Paul got out through the window. 3 traditional approaches to nominal polysemy: Classical polysemy. Nominal expressions are assigned different meanings ((1): abstract text vs concrete object; (2): concrete object vs opening for the window). Indirect reference. Pragmatic functions change the reference of nominal expressions. Elliptic approach. The meaning and reference of nominal expressions don’t change across contexts once we have entirely developed the deeper structure of the sentence. (e.g. (2)b’: Paul got out through the opening of the window)
